ROUND 5: CAPACITY

Cost-conscious people want an interactive service that goes beyond traditional paging yet costs not more than a cellular phone. Many users expect flat rate pricing yet demand high availability and the possibility to send a large number of messages per month.

Looking at the graph above makes it quite clear that a Mobitex™ based interactive messaging service offers capacity that not even flat rate pricing will overload. Mobitex™ has great ability to manage large number of subscribers as well as large amounts of data traffic. In the capacity comparison (that can be studied in detail in a case study below), Mobitex™ capacity in the balanced case is between 13 to 55 times higher than ReFLEX™ and in the unbalanced case, Mobitex™ capacity is between 11 and 21 times higher than ReFLEX™.

In the case study referred to above, the ReFLEX™ calculation is based on two zones with 37 receivers in each zone, (12 channel re-use), three down-link channels at 6400bps, one up-link channel at 800bps and 67% scheduled up-link slots. The Mobitex™ simulation for the corresponding ReFLEX™ coverage area is based on 27 Mobitex™ cells with one base station in each cell. The simulation is made using less than 1% blocking on the up-link as capacity limitation.

First of all, there is no re-use with three channels and by using a common inbound (or uplink as they refer to) channel at 800 bps the network’s capacity is inbound limited. A biased comparison if I ever saw one !!!
