ROUND 6: SCALABILITY

In a dynamic society, scalability is clearly an important key to success for most datacom operators. Many operators begin by offering two-way services in major metropolitan areas that have a large potential customer base and gradually increase two-way capacity as demand for service grows.

There are two ways to increase capacity in a ReFLEX™ zone. One option is to upgrade all transmitters/receivers in a zone with one or more new channels bearing in mind that all transmitters and receivers within the same zone must support the same channels. (Not really, they must be looking at the SkyTel 10KHz channel spacing model) The ReFLEX™ protocol however has a limitation of eight up-link channels within one zone.

Another option is to split a ReFLEX™ zone into several smaller, thereby increasing two-way capacity within each zone. This however affects the radio characteristics in the area between existing sites. Some sites will therefore probably have to be moved and new sites added. This as a result affects existing one-way customers. (Don’t know why one way customers are affected ???)

Mobitex™ is designed from the start with flexibility and scalability in mind, allowing capacity to grow dynamically as your market changes. With a Mobitex™ network you can expand coverage as well as enhance capacity in existing coverage areas with heavy traffic simply by adding more base stations.
