Wi-Fi Alliance lays out security guidelines

NEW YORK—Wi-Fi Alliance has laid out new mechanisms for security for the
technology to address concerns about possible hacking.
The specifications, known as Wireless Protected Access, covers 802.11i standard for encryption and 802.1x for access control in homes and office networks. It allows enterprise users to secure access through an authentication server, while home network users will utilize a pre-shared key mode.
The Wi-Fi Alliance, which represents major gear makers across the industry, expects the new mechanisms to take effect in February next year.
“We support the industry-wide implementation of this specification to provide increased levels of security for wireless LANs,” said David Favreau, director of wireless products for Agere Systems’ client systems group.

Wireless data revenues grow by 135 percent

WASHINGTON—Wireless data revenues have grown by 135 percent and voice
revenues have increased 19 percent since last year, according to the semi-annual
survey by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association.
“Wireless technology continues to show robust growth, defying the downward trends in the tech and telecom sectors. Wireless data is particularly strong, as more companies introduce devices with features like text messaging and gaming capabilities,” said CTIA President Thomas Wheeler.
