Dear Friends and Industry Colleagues, The response to last Friday's newsletter was overwhelming. Thanks very much to the many people who called and sent messages. Welcome to the all of the new advertisers. Several others are getting their copy ready. I have dropped the rate to where anyone should be able to afford to advertise here. It's only $15.38 per issue for the basic advertising package. ($400 for 6 months or 26 issues.) More details below. Interesting news this week—a big shake-up at Glenayre Electronics. Be sure to check out the product sections at the end of the newsletter. This comes to you because of the support of the various paging and wireless data manufacturers. |

| I am planning to attend the big APCO Conference and Expo in Indianapolis next week. There are three or four companies that advertise in this newsletter that will be exhibiting, and I want to see all the new products and talk to several of the people who will be there. This is a big radio communications show for the Public Safety market. If you are there, give me a call on my cellphone: 972-523-8258 so we can meet. | ||

Doggett to Leave Glenayre in Late 2003 Atlanta, GA—August 4, 2003—Glenayre Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:GEMS) announced today that Eric L. Doggett, president and chief executive officer for Glenayre, will be leaving the company within six months. The company’s chairman, Clarke H. Bailey, will assume the responsibilities of CEO at that time on an interim basis. Mr. Bailey previously served as chief executive officer of the company. Doggett, who has been with the company since mid-1999, led Glenayre through dramatic changes as the company transitioned out of the rapidly declining paging infrastructure market and refocused the business on the Enhanced Services Platforms (ESP) market. The company overcame significant challenges as the telecom equipment market contracted and believes it is well positioned to continue growing market share. “In 1999, Glenayre derived over two-thirds of its revenue from paging equipment, a market which was rapidly declining. With only $12 million in cash, a shrinking revenue base, and over 2,200 employees, we had to move quickly to improve liquidity and right-size the cost structure, and do this while repositioning the company to focus on the ESP market,” explained Doggett. “Through divestiture, discontinuing operations and restructuring we reduced our headcount to under 400 employees. We increased our total cash and short-term investments to over $97 million. We are debt-free, have two quarters of double-digit sequential revenue growth under our belts, and expect our continuing operations to reach breakeven in the fourth quarter of this year.” “I am proud to have taken part in building one of the best teams in our industry,” Doggett commented. “With this team in place, our product strategy validated and delivering, and revenue growing again, the timing is right for me to look for my next challenge. I am a significant stockholder in the company, and I strongly believe in the opportunities for Glenayre and the ability of the company to realize them. I want to thank my fellow stockholders, our customers and, most importantly, Glenayre employees for their support over the past four years and for their continued commitment to Glenayre.” Bailey praised Doggett for his efforts during this turbulent time, “Under Eric’s leadership, Glenayre became the third largest provider of enhanced services for carrier grade networks. We are pleased with the strategy that Eric put in place and remain very excited about the future of our messaging business, particularly with the introduction of our Versera next generation messaging platform elements during this year.” Source: Glenayre Electronics SBC to integrate Wi-Fi with Cingular network Aug. 06, 2003 12:37 PM EST SBC Communications Inc. said it plans to deploy more than 20,000 Wi-Fi hot spots in 6,000 venues during the next three years and create an integrated Wi-Fi and next-generation wireless service with Cingular Wireless L.L.C. that will allow customers to move between the Wi-Fi network and Cingular’s wide area network. The regional telecommunications provider said the FreedomLink service would be available by the end of 2006 in more than 6,000 hotels, airports, convention centers and other venues throughout SBC’s 13-state territory, and it plans to deploy more than 1,000 hot spots in several hundred venues by the end of this year. SBC added that it plans to leverage its existing network infrastructure when possible to deploy the Wi-Fi hot spots, including public telephone infrastructure to establish access points and both DSL and faster T1 connections to transport data from the access point to the network. Verizon Wireless announced a similar deployment initiative earlier this year leveraging 1,000 public telephone terminals in New York City to house free Wi-Fi access points for its current DSL customers. A U.S. court ruled that RIM must prove on appeal that its handhelds do not infringe on NTP Inc.'s patents or quit selling them altogether. RIM and NTP have been entrenched in a battle over patents since before November 2001, when NTP filed an infringement lawsuit claiming eight of its patents for radio-wave technology had been violated. Source: Wireless Week CPA allows 10% government ownership for Iraq license bidders Aug. 05, 2003 12:48 PM EST WASHINGTON—As suspected due to last week’s Pentagon press conference, the Coalition Provisional Authority has changed the rules regarding government ownership of telecommunications companies wanting to offer mobile-phone service in Iraq from 5 percent to 10 percent. “No government shall directly or indirectly own more than 10 percent of any single bidding company or single company in a consortia,” reads a section titled “Company Requirements” available on the Internet at http://cpa-Iraq.org. The change in percentage may allow more participation but may not qualm the criticism the CPA received at the bidders conference in Amman, Jordan, July 31 because the 10-percent amount would still eliminate some prominent players. For example, the Bahrain Telecommunications Co. is 80-percent controlled by the government of Bahrain. Batelco has established an Iraqi subsidiary, which has a 30-percent Iraqi investment, set up a network and briefly last month offered GSM service. Batelco was ordered by the CPA to shut down its network because it was operating without a license. The CPA also extended by one week the deadline for mobile-phone license bids. Bids are now due by 10 a.m. Aug. 21. (IEEE), as the first global wireless standard for reliable, secure, low power remote monitoring and control applications. The IEEE is an international standards organization that defines technical specifications for various wireline and wireless technologies. IEEE 802.15.4 is a simple but powerful packet data protocol providing high reliability through message acknowledgement, error checking, prioritized communications, direct sequence spread spectrum, the ability to change frequencies to avoid interference and user-selectable security levels. IEEE 802.15.4 specifies the physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layers, and defines three license-free frequency bands, including 2.4GHz, 915MHz and 868Mhz, making it a truly global standard. The ZigBee Alliance, in collaboration with the IEEE, is defining the network, security, and application layers above the IEEE 802.15.4 PHY and MAC layers. This cooperation will result in an easy-to-use, standards-based wireless network platform optimized for wireless monitoring and control applications. Network layer architectures include star, mesh, and cluster-tree (a hybrid star/mesh) topologies. Key management for AES encryption will enable highly secure networks, and application profiles will provide interoperable products and systems. This standardization of the radio and network layers will enable companies to focus their development and marketing resources on higher value added activities instead of having to invest in proprietary systems development. Members of the ZigBee Alliance will be meeting in Austin August 18-22 to further discussion of the establishment of the ZigBee standard. Source: The Zigbee Alliance | ||

High-speed simulcast paging with protocols such as POCSAG and FLEX™ requires microsecond accuracy to synchronize the transmission of digital paging signals. Zetron's Simulcast System uses GPS timing information to ensure that the broadcasted transmissions between the nodes of the Simulcast System and associated transmitters are synchronized to very tight tolerances. This system is ideal for public or private paging system operators that use multiple transmitters and wish to create new paging systems or to build out existing systems into new regions.
