FRIDAY - MAY 11, 2007 - ISSUE NO. 261

Dear Friends of Wireless Messaging,

Just a reminder, the AAPC Wireless Forum will take place May 30 — June 1, 2007 at the Marriott Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Hotel reservations must be made TODAY to guarantee the reduced rate of $143/night. To make reservations, call 800-644-2881 and be sure to reference either AAPC or Wireless Forum 2007. It is not too late to register at: www.pagingcarriers.org.

We will have some of the top people—worldwide—from the wireless messaging industry:

  • Ken Hardman, Esq. — Legal Counsel to AAPC
  • Ron Mercer — Global Fax Networks
  • Jim Weichman — City of Richmond
  • Vic Jensen — Unication USA
  • Mark Youngblood — Duke Power
  • Trace Morris — Morris Wireless
  • Cathy Rammelsberg — St. Lukes Hospital

Messaging: T-Mobile USA subscribers sent a total of nearly 16 billion SMS and MMS messages during the quarter, up from nearly 13 billion in the fourth quarter of 2006. Also up from the mere 7 billion in the first quarter last year. [source]

Who said the public doesn't like wireless text messaging? SHAME-SHAME-SHAME on some paging “big shots” that I know. I heard the CEO of one of the big paging companies tell his management staff that he didn't want his company sending e-mail to his customers. Well, he got his way—then lost his job and that company doesn't exist today — KAPUTT.

There is so much negative sentiment today against paging—it makes me sick. A good example is an article following from The Motley Fool. I don't like to publish articles like this but you and I need to consider all sides of the issue—the health and welfare of paging. (Maybe Fool is a good name for that column. What do you think?) I have said a million times—it ain't over yet! Please excuse my bad grammar. My college professor said it's OK to use bad grammar occasionally—for effect—if you know it's bad when you use it.

Come and hear Ron Mercer's presentation at the conference in Myrtle Beach. He will be presenting some ideas about what we can do. (No I didn't teach him everything he knows! It was the other way around.)

A new issue of The Wireless Messaging Newsletter gets posted on the web each week. A notification goes out by e-mail to subscribers on most Fridays around noon central US time. The notification message has a link to the actual newsletter on the Internet. That way it doesn't fill up your incoming e-mail account.

There is no charge for subscription and there are no membership restrictions. Readers are a very select group of wireless industry professionals, and include the senior managers of many of the world's major Paging and Wireless Data companies. There is an even mix of operations managers, marketing people, and engineers—so I try to include items of interest to all three groups. It's all about staying up-to-date with business trends and technology. I regularly get reader's comments, so this newsletter has become a community forum for the Paging, and Wireless Data communities. You are welcome to contribute your ideas and opinions. Keynote Address

Surviving, Then Thriving

Bernhoff Dahl, MD

dr bernie dahl Dr. Bernie Dahl is a board-certified pathologist, author, mountaineer, and entrepreneur, who has successfully applied unique principles of organizational design, dynamics, and leadership skills to a wide range of professional and business ventures. His near-death misadventure on Mount Washington was such a deep experience, that he feels compelled, as a keynote speaker, to share his foolishness and the wisdom gained from that long night out.

The Story: “It was truly a dark and stormy night on Mount Washington in New Hampshire. It was perhaps the darkest and stormiest night of my life, for I came within five minutes of death . . . my death, for my rescuers were about to give up. As a pathologist for almost 30 years, I had developed a close professional relationship with “death and dying” . . . but not with my dying . . . certainly not with my death. The day’s plan was simple, but the misadventure became an experience that altered my life."

The Message: Listen and learn from Dr. Dahl as he recounts how his traumatic experience can help you regain and refocus your life, without having to go through your own near death. The message will be: "Take charge of your personal, business, and organizational lives, lest someone else does!"

Market Challenges and Success in the UK and Europe

Derek Banner European Mobile Messaging Association

In the past 10 to 15 years, the paging industry has lost a vast number of customers. In Europe and elsewhere, many national carriers closed their paging networks completely. However, many customers in these countries relied on the unique qualities of paging in order to provide high quality services, especially in the critical messaging area. To prove the point, private on-site and wide area paging systems are experiencing a resurgence in various countries. How can operators manipulate this to their own advantage? In addition, new services and applications are bringing new revenue streams to the successful operators in Europe. In this presentation, you will learn what they are.

New Generation Weather Station: Paging Growth in Germany and France

Dr. Dietmar Gollnick e*Message Wireless Information Services

Point-to-Multipoint ("Broadcast") advantages of paging allow for a low power consumption, as well as mass market applicable prices for content-driven terminal devices. New Generation Weather Station is an example of a mass market for embedded paging- based systems. The critical success paths include sales channels, economical risk sharing, countrywide high quality coverage, time to market, price, and price model. USA Mobility Reports First Quarter Operating Results

Subscriber, Revenue and Expense Reduction Trends Improve

Stockholder and Analyst Meetings Scheduled for May 16

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/— USA Mobility, Inc. (Nasdaq: USMO), a leading provider of wireless messaging and communications services, today announced operating results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2007. Reported revenue for the quarter was $111.5 million. EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization and accretion) totaled $35.1 million, while operating income was $21.8 million.

First quarter results included:

  • The annual rate of revenue erosion improved to 17.3 percent from 18.6 percent in the first quarter of 2006. Revenue declined $4.5 million, or 3.9 percent, in the first quarter, compared to $8.5 million, or 5.9 percent, in the first quarter of 2006.
  • Average revenue per unit ("ARPU") increased to $8.65 in the first quarter from $8.57 in the fourth quarter of 2006, the first quarterly increase in ARPU in six quarters. ARPU was $8.80 in the first quarter of 2006.
  • Operating expenses, excluding depreciation, amortization and accretion, totaled $76.4 million in the first quarter, a reduction of $8.8 million, or 10.3 percent, from $85.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. Quarterly operating expenses have declined by $19.8 million, or 20.6 percent, from the first quarter 2006, and, as percentage of revenue, are at their lowest level in nearly three years.
  • EBITDA margin (or EBITDA as a percentage of revenue) increased to 31.5 percent in the first quarter, the highest level in more than two years, compared to 28.6 percent in the first quarter of 2006 and 26.6 percent in fourth quarter of 2006.
  • Net unit loss was 193,000 in the first quarter, compared to 252,000 in the first quarter of 2006. Total units in service at March 31, 2007 were 3,912,000, compared to 4,105,000 at December 31, 2006.
  • The annual rate of subscriber erosion in the first quarter improved to 15.6 percent from 17.5 percent in the first quarter of 2006. The quarterly rate of subscriber loss was 4.7 percent in the first quarter, historically the quarter with the highest net churn, compared to 5.2 percent in the first quarter of 2006.
  • Capital expenses were $5.1 million, compared to $4.4 million in the year-earlier quarter.
  • The Company's cash balance at March 31, 2007 was $80.3 million.

"We continued to make significant progress during the first quarter," said Vincent D. Kelly, president and chief executive officer. "The annual rate of subscriber and revenue erosion showed further improvement as we focused our sales and marketing efforts on our core subscriber segments - including healthcare, government services and large business enterprise — and placed greater emphasis on our customer care and loyalty programs. While gross unit placements declined from robust fourth quarter levels, we were encouraged that total disconnects were flat with the prior quarter. As we move through 2007 we look for continued improvement in both gross placements and customer disconnects."

Kelly added, "During the quarter we also established and solidified several key relationships that we believe will enhance our standing and prospects in the important healthcare market. We partnered with Amcom Software, Inc. to provide advanced automated wireless communications capabilities to healthcare organizations, we joined with the American College of Emergency Physicians as its official paging and cellular technology sponsor, and we expanded our customer relationship with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services by providing devices for the agency's National Disaster Medical Systems unit, which is responsible for nationwide emergency medical response. We believe these alliances, and others, underscore USA Mobility's emerging role as a provider of essential wireless communications services to the hospital and healthcare industry as well as emergency medical and disaster preparedness organizations located throughout the country."

Kelly also noted that the Company returned capital to stockholders again during the first quarter, consistent with its stated cash flow generation strategy and goal of returning cash to stockholders. The Company paid a regular quarterly cash distribution of $0.65 per share, or an aggregate amount of approximately $17.8 million, on March 15, 2007 to stockholders of record on February 22, 2007. The cash distribution was paid as a return of capital. In addition, the Board of Directors on May 2, 2007 declared both a regular quarterly cash distribution of $0.65 per share and a special cash distribution of $1.00 per share. Both the regular and special cash distributions will be paid on June 7, 2007 to stockholders of record on May 17, 2007. The Company expects the entire amount of both cash distributions, a total of approximately $45.1 million, to be paid as a return of capital.

Thomas L. Schilling, chief financial officer, said the Company continued its aggressive expense reduction efforts during the quarter. "Operating expenses (excluding depreciation, amortization and accretion) of $76.4 million decreased 10.3 percent from the fourth quarter of 2006 and were 20.6 percent lower than they were a year ago," he said, "outpacing the year-over-year decline in revenue of 17.3 percent. Moreover, operating expense as a percentage of revenue was 68.5 percent in the first quarter, the lowest level since USA Mobility was formed in November of 2004. As a result, the combination of lower expenses, coupled with gradually improving revenue trends and slightly higher ARPU, contributed to an increase in both quarter-to- quarter EBITDA and EBITDA margin. While we are pleased and encouraged by these financial trends," Schilling said, "we are maintaining our previous financial guidance for 2007 of revenues between $400 million to $410 million, operating expenses — excluding depreciation, amortization and accretion — between $295 million to $300 million, and capital expenses between $18 million to $20 million."

The Company is working with its auditors, Grant Thornton LLP, to finalize the implementation of FASB Interpretation No. 48, Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes. Once the implementation is complete, the Company will file its report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 2007 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

As previously announced, USA Mobility will host a meeting for financial analysts and other investors in New York City at approximately 10:30 a.m. on May 16, 2007, immediately following the Company's Annual Meeting of Stockholders. The Annual Meeting of Stockholders is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the offices of Latham & Watkins LLP, Suite 1200, 885 Third Avenue (53rd Street and Third Avenue). The analyst meeting, which will include a review of first quarter results, will be held at the same location.

Foolish Forecast: USA Mobility Clings to Cash

By Dave Mock
May 7, 2007

The last bastion of a bygone era, U.S. paging king USA Mobility (NYSE: USMO) will report firs-quarter earnings on Wednesday. Let's get the jump on what's in store.

What analysts say:

  • Buy, sell, or waffle? Talk about the ugly stepchild — the Wall Street analyst community largely shuns USA Mobility. Only one analyst, from Matrix Research, even puts out estimates on the company. Matrix's conclusion? Sell. In our Motley Fool CAPS investor database, 20 of the 39 investors who have rated the stock give it the thumbs-down, and it merits only a one-star rating out of a possible five.
  • Revenues. Matrix looks for the company to report $109.5 million in revenue this quarter, down 19% from last year.
  • Earnings. Our lone analyst is expecting $0.30 per share in earnings, well below the $0.45 reported a year ago.

What management says:
USA Mobility is milking the decaying paging industry for all the cash it can while it looks around for new ways to generate revenue from wireless services. And the company is indeed fighting back as paging customers defect to wireless alternatives from competitors Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T). We're told that CEO Vincent Kelly's priorities for 2007 are these: "(1) drive cash flow by supporting a low-cost operating platform, (2) preserve revenue per unit, (3) reduce paging subscriber erosion, and (4) maximize revenue opportunities around our core business segments, particularly health care."

What management does:
The company has shown that you can still make money in the paging business. With the rate of subscriber losses slowing, operating and net margins are perking up slightly as USA Mobility is able to improve operating efficiency. This has kept free cash flow fairly steady, with the only concern being a recent dip to $126.1 million in 2006 that is partly due to an increase in capital expenditures.

Metric 12/05 3/06 6/06 9/06 12/06
Gross Margin 64.4% 64.1% 64.1% 64% 63.7%
Operating Margin 7.5% 10% 12.7% 14% 14.9%
Net Margin 2.1% 4.3% 7.1% 7.6% 8.1%
Operating Cash Flow* $139.3 $151.2 $150.5 $154.1 $147.2
Free Cash Flow* $125.8 $135.8 $133.4 $135.8 $126.2

*In millions. All data courtesy of Capital IQ, a division of Standard & Poor's. Data reflects trailing-12-month performance for the quarters ended in the named months.

One Fool says:
While nobody seems to want to touch USA Mobility with a 10-foot pole, this is the type of investment that Fools and value investors love to at least keep tabs on. It would be worthwhile for investors to monitor progress at the company this quarter to see whether it can maintain cash flow and capitalize on new revenue opportunities, such as its deal to resell Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) products. Investors willing to wade into these murky waters can keep afloat with a special $1-per-share payout that was just announced — and that's on top of a whopping 12% yield.

That huge yield comes with comparable risk, however, as the anticipated regular quarterly payout for 2007 is more than double the lone estimate for 2007 earnings per share — $2.60 vs. $1.03. Investors had better enjoy that yield while they can, because there is a tremendously high risk that it won't be around in just a few years.

Fool contributor Dave Mock keeps his old numeric pager, figuring someday it will be a prominent display in a technology museum somewhere. He owns no shares of companies mentioned here. Dave is the author of The Qualcomm Equation. The Fool has a disclosure policy.

Court rejects Vonage request for retrial

By Stephen Lawson, IDG News Service, 05/03/07

A U.S. federal appeals court has rejected Vonage's request that it order a lower court to retry a patent-infringement case against the company, Vonage confirmed Thursday.

The VoIP service provider, embroiled in a dispute with Verizon, had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to vacate an earlier jury verdict after a Supreme Court decision this week that is expected to change the way courts look at patent cases. Vonage was already appealing the verdict.

The appeals court declined to order the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia to retry the case, saying instead that Vonage could invoke the Supreme Court decision in its existing appeal, said Vonage spokeswoman Brooke Shulz.

The Supreme Court ruling in the case of KSR International Co. vs. Teleflex Inc., released Monday, is expected to make it easier to invalidate new patents on the grounds that they are obvious combinations of existing inventions. Some legal experts have said the decision could affect the Vonage case.

"We believe our appeal is strong, and are pleased the Court has given us the option to use the expanded obviousness test in our arguments before them. Vonage continues to believe the original verdict was based on erroneous claim construction — meaning the patents in this case were defined in an overly broad and legally unprecedented way," Vonage said in a prepared statement Thursday. The appeals court's decision was the outcome Verizon expected, a company spokesman said.

Vonage's appeal is not expected to be heard until next year. Judge Claude Hilton of the district court issued an injunction on April 6 barring the company from signing up new customers using the technology, but the appeals court has since granted Vonage a permanent stay of the injunction until its appeal has been heard.

Hong Kong Hanky Panky In Dow Jones

Vivian Wai-yin Kwok, 05.09.07, 3:18 AM ET

HONG KONG - When the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission opened a probe last week into unusual trading in shares of Dow Jones, few would have guessed that it would pursue insider trading charges against people so far outside the canyons of Wall Street.

The U.S. securities watchdog filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York on Tuesday against a Hong Kong couple Tuesday for allegedly using insider information to make $8.2 million trading Dow Jones stock before the takeover bid from News Corp. (nyse: NWS - news - people ) was made public.

The SEC is likely to probe the possibility that the inside information came by way of prominent Hong Kong banker David Li, a Dow Jones director who is a longtime business partner and friend of the father of the woman charged in the suit.

The SEC accuses Kan King Wong and Charlotte Ka On Wong Leung of buying 415,000 shares of Dow Jones (nyse: DJ - news - people ) through an account with Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong during the two weeks before the News Corp. bid became public on May 1. Dow Jones shares surged 58% after the news, giving the couple an $8.2 million profit when they sold on May 4, the SEC said. (See “ Insider Trading in Dow Jones”)

The watchdog did not make public any claims as to the source of the couple’s information, however it said in court filings that the pair obtained $3.2 million that was used to buy Dow Jones shares from Charlotte Wong’s father, Hong Kong telecom pioneer Michael Leung Kai Hung.

Leung was not named in the complaint by the SEC, which said its investigation is ongoing, nor was Dow Jones board member Li, who is the chairman and chief executive of the Bank of East Asia (other-otc: BKEAF - news - people ).

The 64-year old Leung is a social worker turned telecom entrepreneur who has been involved in starting a number of companies in Hong Kong, including China Resources People’s Telephone, which was sold to China Mobile (nyse: CHL - news - people ) last year.

After he cashed out of People's Telecom with more than HK$600 million ($76.7 million), Leung started a venture with his sons Eugene and Vincent selling expensive bras branded Top Secret.

Leung and Li have a number of business ties. According to People’s Telephone’s 2004 IPO prospectus, its principal banker was Bank of East Asia.

Leung and Li have a number of business ties. According to People’s Telephone’s 2004 IPO prospectus, its principal banker was Bank of East Asia.

Leung is a member of the board of the Canadian subsidiary of the bank, which is Hong Kong’s largest homegrown lender.

Both men serve on the executive committee of the St. James Settlement, a Hong Kong social services agency.

And in 1990, Leung co-founded the Hong Kong pager company Telepaging Ltd. with Dickson Poon, the retail tycoon who is a brother-in-law of Li.

Li told the Wall Street Journal, "I did not disclose to anyone, not even my wife, any information about Dow Jones."

Li, who is a member of the Executive Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong, comes from a prominent family that has played a leading role in politics, business and the law in Hong Kong for almost a century.

He gained a measure of notoriety in 2002 when paparazzi caught the married man in a liaison in Paris with the daughter of another prominent Hong Kong banker.

Leung’s 34-year-old daughter Charlotte served as executive director of People’s Telephone until the company was acquired by China Mobile.

She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, and worked at Citibank and ABN Amro (nyse: ABN - news - people ) before joining her father’s company in 2004.

Her husband Kan King Wong ran a telecom company called mVantage that had a consultancy contract with People’s Telephone.

Interviewed by Hong Kong’s TVB News, Leung said he learned about the charges against his daughter and son-in-law on Tuesday midnight Hong Kong time, but refused to discuss the case on the advice of his counsel

e2Campus ahead of the curve in university communications

gustavsson
Nick Gustavsson

By: Anne Keisman
05/08/2007

Nick Gustavsson's phone rang continuously on the afternoon of April 16 — potential customers calling with a sudden, fervent interest in his Leesburg-based business.

While pleased with the new enthusiasm, he was not happy for the reason behind the upswing.

Gustavsson sells a campus notification system called e2Campus, and on April 16, the Virginia Tech shootings shone light on the need for new ways to communicate on school campuses.

After that fateful day, media inquiries piled in to Gustavsson as well. He was a guest on a radio call-in show, and a caller subtly accused him of taking advantage of the tragedy by promoting his business.

Virginia schools that use e2campus

  • Virginia Commonwealth University
  • University of Virginia
  • Mountain Empire Community College
  • Ferrum College
  • Central Virginia Community College

Maryland schools that use e2campus

  • Anne Arundel Community College
  • Bowie State University
  • Coppin State College
  • University of Maryland — Shady Grove
  • Towson University

"I've been around for three-and-a-half years, so I don't really think I'm taking advantage of anything," he said. "I'm just glad we now have a chance to be a part of the solution."

His company, Omnilert, began selling e2Campus in 2003. By April 2007, he had sold the technology to 35 customers. The number changes hourly, he said, but he now has nearly 88 universities and colleges on board.

His system, known formally as a "selective mass notification system," transmits messages instantly from a central Web site to every cell phone, e-mail, pager and Web page entered into the system - no matter what service-provider or electronic device is used.

Students and university personnel can opt in and out of other services - like event announcements and weather advisories.

Gustavsson, who lives outside Baltimore, located the business in Leesburg because, he said, "it is the perfect place for a knowledge-based business.

"Leesburg is a wonderful place, and its location is close enough to partners and vendors and yet far away to afford a more relaxed work environment."

When deciding to invest in the e2Campus technology, Gustavsson, with a background in the tech world, looked at how campuses were set up for mass notification. He was shocked at how primitive it was. Campuses used everything from fliers on community boards to - on one campus — an air-raid siren.

"That's not very informative. It's good if the Russians are coming," he said, "but not if there is gunman on campus."

Speed is one factor in effective mass notification, he said, but not the only one. Speed is only as good as the method of delivery. Most students have cell phones, he said, so the company focused on that technology.

"We followed the herd — the herd being the students' behavior," said Gustavsson.

The system is easy to use: it is totally Web-based — no software to install, no hardware to buy.

"If you have ever shopped on Amazon or eBay, you are way over-qualified [to use the system]," he said.

The system also has security measures in place that ensure that spam can't flood the system.

He stressed that the technology is only one tool in the toolbox for campus security. The procedure the school has for activating the alerts is key, he said.

Omnilert has growing competition in this market, but Gustavsson said the company's head start gives them a definite advantage.

Locally, the Loudoun Youth Soccer Association uses another of Omnilert's hi-tech offerings - RainedOut.com. This service gets the word out about game cancellations to parents, athletes and coaches.

Palm Adds Microsoft Push to Treo

By Brad Smith
WirelessWeek - May 09, 2007

reo 755p Palm is out with a new Treo for the Sprint network. It may look like some previous Palm Treos, but the new Treo 755p has some new wrinkles, including push e-mail via Microsoft Exchange servers and a built-in mapping application.

The 755p, which Sprint expects to start selling by the end of the month for $279.99, is the replacement for the Treo 700p. This model doesn't have an antenna and has been slimmed down some. What's most interesting, though, is what's inside.

The handset does use the familiar Palm OS but it is the first Treo to include built-in support for Microsoft Direct Push Technology. That's essentially what Microsoft Windows Mobile offers.

The 755p also has Google Maps for mobile built-in, with its own icon link on the home screen, which uses the GPS capabilities of the device to get directions or find locations. In addition, the handset has Sprint Instant Messaging, which communicates with AIM, Yahoo! and Windows Messenger platforms, Sprint TV, the ability to use the phone as a modem and Good Mobile Messaging. The 755p runs on Sprint's EV-DO network.

The FCC has issued a Public Notice urging merchants to use caution in handling telephone orders for goods. According to the FCC, merchants that accept orders made by telephone for goods and services should take steps to ensure that, for any order placed by phone, the payment method or credit card is valid and the purchaser is authorized to use the particular credit card. In addition, there are some indicia of fraudulent telephone orders or business transactions that merchants can use to help determine if an order placed by phone is legitimate. These indicia include a caller who: (1) is happy to order “whatever you have in stock”; (2) supplies multiple credit cards as one or more are declined; (3) cannot provide the credit card verification code number (the three digit number on the back of the card); (4) wants the goods shipped through a third party and/or an overseas location; (5) will not identify himself or give a company name; and (6) changes delivery or payment method after an order has been approved. The Commission has received informal complaints that people without disabilities, who are posing as deaf or hard of hearing consumers, are misusing an Internet based telecommunications relay service (TRS or Relay Service) called “IP Relay” to perpetrate fraudulent business transactions, often by using stolen or fake credit cards. The Commission reminds merchants that TRS provides access to telephone services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing or who have a speech disability. This is accomplished through TRS facilities that are staffed by specially trained communications assistants (CAs) (also called “relay operators”) who relay conversations between people who use different types of telecommunications devices. Initially, all Relay Service calls were made to or from a text telephone (TTY) connected to a regular telephone line. The CA served as the "link" in the conversation, converting TTY text for the TTY user to voice for the telephone user to hear, and converting voice messages to text for the TTY user to read. Many TRS users now use a computer or similar device and the Internet to communicate with an “IP Relay” CA, who continues to serve as the “link” to the telephone user. Advancements in technology are enabling other forms of TRS as well, such as connecting through video conferencing equipment with a CA who is a sign language interpreter. The Commission also reminds merchants who accept telephone orders that they must not “hang up” on calls made through a Relay Service. Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires merchants to ensure that people with disabilities have access to their services. Therefore, if a merchant accepts telephone orders from the general public, the merchant cannot refuse to accept calls from people who are deaf or hard of hearing or who have a speech disability who call through a Relay Service. Calls made through a Relay Service can and must be handled in the same way as any telephone call. Purchases made with stolen or fake credit cards are illegal, and the Department of Justice and the FBI can investigate. The Federal Trade Commission is also aware of this problem. Persons who have been defrauded should contact the FTC directly at www.ftc.gov or 877-FTCHELP. The FBI also has a website for complaints and information regarding Internet crimes: www.ic3.gov. The public may also contact the FCC’s Consumer Assistance Information Line at 1-888-225-5322 (voice) or 1- 888-835-5322 (TTY). The Commission has a pending Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that is examining other steps the FCC might take prevent misuse of IP Relay.

Latin American Messaging Services Market To Boom

Frost & Sullivan says the growth is a result of the stronger competition seen in the market.

efy news network
EFY News Network

Friday, May 11, 2007: Messaging services are becoming an important source of revenues for mobile operators and a considerable growth is likely in the messaging services market during upcoming years. This significant growth is a result of the content strategies of the carriers, promoting the messages not only as a tool of communication, but also as entertainment. According to Frost & Sullivan's, Latin American Mobile Messaging Services Market, the market earned revenues of $2.4 billion in 2005 and is estimated to reach $7.8 billion in 2011.

"The stronger competition, marketing strategies and stronger advertising campaigns are likely to foster the demand of messaging services, especially multimedia messaging services (MMS) due to the accessibility of enabled handsets," said José Crujeiras, research analyst, Frost & Sullivan. "The main issue that is likely to drive the mobile messaging market in the future is the competitive circumstances in each country."

During their process of expansion, the two major mobile companies in Latin America continue to define the path and continuity of this market. In some countries, new companies are stabilising, and in others, several fusions and acquisitions are taking place. Each country is experiencing different situations and thereby creating new movements in the market.

Considering these facts, not only is a stronger competition likely in the pricing issue, but high-developed marketing campaigns are likely to be stabilised to gain market share. However, in some countries, prices are lower than before and the pricing war is allowing a highly competitive market.

"High prices and low offer of attractive plans can obstruct the growth of the markets causing a lower usage of the technology," explained Crujeiras. "Moreover, despite agreements that have been consolidated between operators for these types of services, there are still restrictions for MMS."

The major opportunities are localised in offering high-quality plans for the young users. Despite this, there are still other markets to explore and different services to offer, especially in the short message service (SMS) and MMS markets, such as enterprise messaging, as well as easier communication or more appropriate applications. Operators need to have a strategy to reach other segments instantly so users can normally access services such as SMS and MMS.

EMERGENCY AUTOMATION & NOTIFICATION

• FIREHOUSES SCHOOLS PUBLIC FACILITIES GOVERNMENT FACILITIES EMERGENCY ROOMS

WHAT DO FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, FORTUNE 500 COMPANIES, WISPS, HAVE IN COMMON?

THEY ALL USE NIGHTHAWK.

Nighthawk Systems Inc. manufactures low cost and reliable remote control products for fire house alerting, volunteer alerting, activation of warning signs and sirens, and a number of applications for public safety.  The Company manufactures the EA1 and the FAS-8 which have been designed specifically for these applications.  Both products are paging based and will work with any public or private paging network.  They are available in all VHF, UHF, and 900 MHz paging frequencies.  The products can serve as the primary notification system or an excellent, low-cost backup to existing systems.

Public Emergency Notification & Volunteer Alerting

The EA1 is the solution for remotely activating public warning signage.  Examples include tornado sirens, flash flood warnings, fire danger, Amber Alert, icy roads, etc.  The EA1 can also send text messages to scrolling signs.  This can occur in conjunction with the activation of audible alarms and visual strobes.  This is ideal for public notification in buildings, schools, hotels, factories, etc. The group call feature allows for any number of signs or flashing lights to be activated at the same time over a wide geographic area.  In addition, the EA1 Emergency Alert is the perfect solution for low cost yet highly effective alerting of volunteer fire fighters in their home.  When activated the EA1 will emit an audible alarm and activate the power outlet on the units faceplate.  A common setup is to simply place the EA1 on a table and plug a lamp into the faceplate.  When paged from dispatch or any touch tone phone the EA1 will awaken the fire fighter to a lit room.  As an option the EA1 can be ordered with a serial cable, allowing for attachment of a serial printer.  When paged the alphanumeric message will be printed out at the same time the alarm sounds and the outlet is activated.  The EA1 is an ideal complement to alphanumeric belt pagers common to volunteers.

Firehouse Automation

The FAS-8 is designed for activating one or more relays in a firehouse and if desired, printing the alphanumeric message to a serial printer.  For this application the FAS-8 is set to activate upon receiving the proper paging cap code sent from 911 dispatch.  Up to eight different devices can be activated all with individual time functions.  The most common devices to turn on include the PA amplifier, audible wake up alarm, and house lights.  The most common device turned off is the stove.  The FAS-8 can accept up to 8 different cap codes and have separate relay and time functions per cap code.  This allows for different alerting to be accomplished at the same physical location depending upon which cap code is sent.  This can be very helpful when fire crews and medical crews are housed in the same building.

Apptix Shows Fruits of Acquisition With Blackberry Service

By Dan Muse
May 9, 2007

Apptix, a provider that specializes in offering hosted Microsoft Exchange for small businesses, wasted little time after its purchase of WebMessenger to announce the first product from the newly acquired company.

After buying the provider of mobile IM products on Monday for $7 million, yesterday Apptix announced the release of WebMessenger Message Alerts for BlackBerry, a product designed to enhance management of e-mail and SMS messages on BlackBerry devices.

The Message Alerts service is aimed at BlackBerry users who receive a high volume of messages. The application runs in the background on the BlackBerry device, allowing you to define rules that are automatically applied to incoming e-mail, SMS messages and phone calls.

According to Jackie Funk, director of marketing at Apptix, you can define rules and alerts on any combination of attributes for incoming e-mail or SMS messages, including subject, from, to, cc, as well as message content. You can also create the rules and alerts through the context menus in your inbox and address book.

While all incoming messages continue to be received on the device, the Message Alerts application is designed to eliminate the need to constantly check messages in order to avoid being late in responding to items that are urgent.

Funk used the example of a medical practice that's an early customer to illustrate the point of the rules-based service. All 24 doctors in the practice carry both a Blackberry and a pager. Now the doctors can replace the pager because Message Alerts sends continuous or repeating alerts until the message is acknowledged. She said this is more efficient than a pager that will alert the doctor only once. "You also set up rules so that if doctor X does respond, doctor Y is notified," Funk said.

Rules can be scheduled for specific times or disabled temporarily and you can also customize audio and/or vibrate notifications. The new service offers the capability to forward or delete the e-mail and/or mark it as read and retrieve the entire e-mail (or e-mails up to certain size).

Message Alerts for BlackBerry is well-suited for businesses that run 24x7 operations, Funk said. For example, Apptix expects it to be popular with bankers, brokers, doctors, emergency and support personnel, and other business people who typically rely on pagers.

For larger businesses that want to have an additional level of control, Apptix offers an Enterprise Edition that's designed to provide automatic backup and restore of rules on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, Web-based license management for administrators and centralized registration of all devices. The enterprise product also offers the capability to create standard rules on the desktop and then centrally push out to individuals, groups or all employees. Administrators can also lock down certain rules on the device that cannot be modified by individuals.

Pricing for the standard edition starts at $20 per user. Pricing for the Enterprise Edition starts at $28 per user. Volume pricing is available, according to Apptix.

With its acquisition of WebMessenger, Apptix picked up a line of hosted mobile instant messaging products designed for both small firms and larger customers. WebMessenger Mobile Platform provides mobile, real-time presence, voice and collaboration services. WebMessenger Mobile Platform is designed to let you stay connected while away from your desktop PC through any number of wireless devices/operating systems, including BlackBerry, Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian and Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0.

WebMessenger's applications are designed to allow you to communicate across public and private IM networks, including AOL, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, GoogleTalk, Jabber, Skype, IBM Lotus Sametime, Jabber XCP, Microsoft Live Communications Server and Reuters Messaging.

"The acquisition of WebMessenger will bring the cost benefits and productivity enhancing features of mobile IM and presence management to our 150,000 SMB users," said Amir Hudda, CEO of Apptix in a statement released earlier this week. "Furthermore, it provides Apptix with the necessary intellectual properties to deliver on our vision of on-demand unified communications for the SMB market."

According to Funk, the presence capability provided by WebMessenger's technology is key to Apptix future product plans. She said the company had considered either licensing technology or developing its own. However, acquiring WebMessenger for a relatively small amount of money made the most sense given that the vast majority of WebMessenger's employees work in product development. Apptix' unified communications platform is scheduled to be released later this year.
